POETSARTISTS @ GALLERY 1261 CONTEMPORARY REALISM EXHIBITION

Judith Peck
Judith Peck textured portrait painting

I approach each new work with a point of view about the human experience and our common striving. Each element of the creative process shapes the expression of that idea: finding the right model and working with the way they emote that point of view; manipulating the paint in a way that captures its essence and shows the painter’s hand; and even finding a subject that will elicit the passion needed to invest in, struggle through, and complete a new piece. But it all starts with the germ of an idea that, with enough deliberate tending, might bloom into something greater.

Judith Peck -Memory's Reflection
oil and plaster on board- 40x30

My painting Memory's Reflection finds inspiration in and dialogue with Bouguereau's The Nymphaeum. His nymphs frolic naked by the water, beckoning the viewer to lose themselves in a fantasy born of classical Greece. Memory’s Reflection offers a modern retelling as allegory. My figure is unable to look away from the oncoming current while balancing herself precariously. Non-idealized and in modern dress, she denies our own attempts at escapism, demanding we face our history as she does. The canvas itself is affected by rending the classical idealism of The Nymphaeum into modern day – its surface is cracked with shards of broken plaster, evoking not only the modern condition of ancient Greek pottery, but also the conditions of living in a broken world.

A new Buzzfeed article is out! It features my painting as well as 99 other portraits that are worth a look!

100 Facebook Portraits

I think if Picasso were around today, he'd be painting his Facebook friends. From time to time we have all been inspired by our Facebook Friends. Some of the portraits highlighted on this list are traditional head and shoulders and some are just wild like the portrait of the guy with an octopus on his head! There are over a billion users on Facebook. Here are 100 professional artists who from time to time have found the time to render a likeness of their Facebook friends. Maybe one of these will someday be at an auction. Some have already been exhibited. Follow these artists on Instagram and check out all of their work and maybe you will find one to immortalize you in a portrait. One thing I forgot to mention is that these artists are all members of our very strong PoetsArtists community platform.

Collector's Corner: A Look At What Art Collectors Are Shopping For

For this article the publisher of PoetsArtists asks art collectors to look through new work posted on the Community tab of the platform. The art collectors remain anonymous and give feedback on the works they like from the selections. Please keep in mind that this platform centers on Figurative artworks. In some cases the same artwork was chosen more than once since all the collectors participating were selecting from the same works.
