Judith Peck -Memory's Reflection
oil and plaster on board- 40x30

My painting Memory's Reflection finds inspiration in and dialogue with Bouguereau's The Nymphaeum. His nymphs frolic naked by the water, beckoning the viewer to lose themselves in a fantasy born of classical Greece. Memory’s Reflection offers a modern retelling as allegory. My figure is unable to look away from the oncoming current while balancing herself precariously. Non-idealized and in modern dress, she denies our own attempts at escapism, demanding we face our history as she does. The canvas itself is affected by rending the classical idealism of The Nymphaeum into modern day – its surface is cracked with shards of broken plaster, evoking not only the modern condition of ancient Greek pottery, but also the conditions of living in a broken world.
